New Mexico Historic Sites announces new regional manager for Los Luceros Historic Site

Alcalde, NM – New Mexico Historic Sites is excited to announce that Carlyn Stewart has been promoted to regional manager of Los Luceros Historic Site (LLHS). Stewart has been in her new role since May 14.  

“As our newest Historic Site, Los Luceros is brimming with opportunities to tell the remarkable stories of northern New Mexico,” said Patrick Moore, executive director of New Mexico Historic Sites. “Carly joined the staff soon after the site’s official designation and has both the vision and the passion to share the history of this incredible place with locals and visitors alike.” 

Stewart has worked as the instructional coordinator and archaeologist at LLHS since 2020. In that role, she cultivated a strong sense of community between LLHS and the surrounding areas through virtual and in-person fieldtrips for local school districts and summer camps, as well as interpretive programs like “Stories from the Land” summer camp kits and the Folklore Garden. A standout example of her work as instructional coordinator is the New Mexico Outdoor Pass Program, a partnership between LLHS and Pajarito Environmental Education Center, which encourages local families to get outside through workshops, activities, and incentives. Stewart also leaned into social media for LLHS throughout the last two years, using platforms like Facebook and TikTok to educate and engage the site’s visitors virtually and expanding the site’s reach significantly.  

Stewart graduated Magna Cum Laude with Honors, earning a B.A. in Anthropology from the University of Arizona. She then earned her M.A. in Public Archaeology from the University of New Mexico. Stewart has worked throughout Arizona and New Mexico as an archaeologist and educator. She was the winner of the Powers Prize for the best extemporaneous talk given by an archaeologist under the age of 35 at the 2018 Pecos Conference. 

“I am thrilled to continue to share the history and beauty of Los Luceros Historic Site with the public in this new capacity,” Stewart said. “Everyone who visits Los Luceros, no matter their background, can connect to some aspect of the site’s history, culture, or land. I look forward to continuing to foster those relationships.” 

In her personal life, Stewart is the co-chair of the local Velarde/Alcalde FireWise community group. She also enjoys archaeology, making earrings, hiking, camping, backpacking, reading, and spending time with her husband, two dogs, two cats, and ferret.
