Upcoming Events at Fort Selden Historic Site

(Radium Springs, New Mexico) – Fort Selden Historic Site, in southern New Mexico, is getting ready for summer, setting aside a special day to honor fathers, and announcing a series of summer kids classes for children.

On Saturday, June 16, the Fort hosts a family fun day in honor of Fathers which includes a continental breakfast served outside by the fire from 9 – 11 a.m. along with games and activities for the whole family until 1 p.m.

Admission: $5 for adults. Children 16 and under are free. Cash or check only. Sponsored by the Museum of NM Foundation

Fort Selden also hosts a series of four classes for children this summer. Registration is required at least one week ahead for Fort Selden’s Summer Kid’s classes. Snacks are provided. $5 cash or check only. All activities are outside. All classes are sponsored by The Museum of NM Foundation.

• Building with Dirt: Friday, June 22, 9 a.m.- Noon, Ages 8-12: Learn about adobe construction and make and take your own adobe building.

• Soap Making: Friday, June 29, 9 a.m. - Noon, Ages 8-12: Making soap was part of daily life in the past. Make your own molded soaps to take home. 

• Bats of the Chihuahua Desert: Friday, July 13, 9 a.m. - Noon, Ages 6-10: Everything has gone batty as we learn to appreciate our furry friends.

• Games & Toys of the Past: Friday, July 27, 9am-Noon, Ages 6-10: Children have always loved to play. Join us for a day of play and learn about the games and toys of the 1800s.

About New Mexico Historic Sites: http://nmhistoricsites.org/ On March 14, 1931, the New Mexico Historic Site system was established by an Act for the Preservation of the Scientific Resources of New Mexico, to "declare by public proclamation that historic and prehistoric structures and other objects of scientific interest that are situated upon the lands owned or controlled by the State of New Mexico, shall be state monuments, and may reserve as a part thereof such parcels of land as may be necessary to the proper care and management of the objects to be protected." Under the direction of the New Mexico Department of Cultural Affairs, six sites are open to the public: Coronado, Fort Selden, Fort Stanton, Fort Sumner Historic Site/Bosque Redondo Memorial, Jemez, and Lincoln. The Los Luceros Historic Property is open to the public during scheduled events and by appointment (505) 476-1130.

In 2004, the J. Paul Taylor Family bequeathed the Barela-Reynolds House and Property on the Mesilla Plaza to the Department of Cultural Affairs.  Still serving as J. Paul Taylor’s private home, the property will become a Historic Site after his passing.
