Museum Announces NatureScapes 2017 Competition Topic: Water
(Albuquerque, NM) – New Mexico shutterbugs can commence gathering images for the NatureScapes 2017 competition. The New Mexico Museum of Natural History & Science (NMMNHS) announced this year’s contest topic is “Water”, a theme appropriate to our desert setting.
NatureScapes is a yearly photo contest held by the Museum that encourages contestants to celebrate the nature of New Mexico through the art of the photography. Photographs are judged by local experts and prizes are supported by the NMMNHS Foundation. Each year, the Museum hangs 30 of the winning photographs. Last year the number of submissions from photographers across New Mexico nearly doubled compared to 2015. Children are encouraged to participate with special prizes for students (under 18).
“The Museum is happy to host this opportunity for photographers to show their passion for the environment through their work,” said Museum Executive Director, Margie Marino. “This invitation allows professional and amateur photographers freedom to express their love and concern for New Mexico focusing on a naturalist topic that has meaning for all of our visitors.”
The Museum encourages participants to think broadly about the topic, but stay focused on natural areas across New Mexico. Photographs of water may include landscapes of rivers, lakes or snowfields; canyons carved by years of flowing water; rainstorms (or not); or close-ups of water in natural places. Let your imagination (and your hiking boots) guide your choices for your submission this year.
“I’m a freshwater ecologist living in the desert,” said Bioscience Curator Ayesha Burdett. “I can’t wait to see water through the photographer’s eye! “
The entry fee is $15 for the first photograph and $5 for each additional photograph (up to a maximum of four photographs per entrant). Entries are accepted from August 1 to August25. The entry form can be downloaded at NatureScapes2017EntryForm
The NatureScapes 2017 exhibition runs through January 19, 2018.
