Museum of Art Hosts 2017 Art+Feminism Wikipedia Edit-a-Thon

For Immediate Release: February 1, 2017 (Santa Fe, NM)—Joining with other institutions around the world, the New Mexico Museum of Art is hosting the fourth annual Art+Feminism Wikipedia Edit-a-Thon to generate coverage of women and the arts on Wikipedia, and encourage female editorship.  

Back by popular demand, the all-day event is scheduled for Saturday, March 11, 2017, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Museum’s historic St. Francis Auditorium.

Created four years ago, the Art+Feminism Wikipedia Edit-a-Thon event was developed to address the reality that Wikipedia’s content and community skews male, creating significant gaps in this popular repository of knowledge. Participants address this absence in an all-day communal updating of Wikipedia’s entries on contemporary art and feminism. It begins with tutorials for beginners and includes digital and print reference materials. Attendees are encouraged to edit any entry of interest related to art, feminism, gender studies, and LGBTQ issues.

The Edit-a-Thon begins at 10 a.m. with a conversation on contemporary feminism and digital culture including a tutorial “Introduction to Editing Wikipedia” for the beginning ‘Wikipedian’,” which runs until noon. From 1-4 p.m., there will be advanced sessions with editing support, reference materials, and breakout groups for more focused conversations about related issues, including intellectual property, notability and LGBTQ visibility on Wikipedia.

Participants are encouraged to bring a laptop. Individuals of all gender identities and expressions are invited to participate including transgender and cisgender women.  

In previous years, more than 1500 people at more than 75 events around the world participated in the annual Art+Feminism Wikipedia Edit-a-Thon, resulting in the creation of nearly 400 new pages and significant improvements to 500 articles on Wikipedia in 2015. Edit-a-Thons are being planned for the month of March at an estimated 125 venues on 6 continents.

New this year, we are partnering with Central Features Contemporary Art in Albuquerque where they are also hosting an editathon at 514 Central Ave SW building on the same date 10-4PM.
