SANTA FE – Explore the latest online programming from the New Mexico Department of Cultural Affairs (DCA), bringing the state’s unique blend of cultures into your home through its museums, historic sites, and cultural institutions.
This week includes three outstanding programs:
The National Hispanic Cultural Center (NHCC) will host a Facebook Live panel discussion on the book "Querencia: Reflections on the New Mexico Homeland" at 1 p.m. on Sunday, June 28. Moderated by Valerie Martinez, History & Literary Arts director at the NHCC, the panel will be composed of the book’s editors, including the state’s inaugural Poet Laureate Levi Romero. "Querencia" is a collection of stories that explores New Mexico through the experiences and perspectives of ChicanX and indigenous/Genízaro writers and scholars from across the state. The NHCC publishes the LatinX Book Review blog, featuring books written by Latinx authors of all genres.
The diversity of New Mexico’s incredible landscape is on full display in the latest Quick Trip video released by the Sandia Mountain Natural History Center, in partnership with the New Mexico Museum of Natural History & Science. In this latest video, viewers can explore the six life zones one would pass during a 40-mile trek from the museum’s location in the Old Town Albuquerque to the highest point of the Sandia Mountains. Each Quick Trip video features nature activities or hikes for the public to enjoy.
On Friday, June 26, at 7 p.m. the New Mexico Arts and the Museum of Indian Arts & Culture together will host the final performance scheduled this year of the popular virtual concert series Our Fair New Mexico, featuring award-winning Latin music singer and guitarist Nacha Mendez and award-winning hip-hop artist G Precious. Watch the concert on the New Mexico Arts Facebook page. “Our Fair New Mexico” highlights musicians living in New Mexico, performing in some DCA’s most beautiful settings.
Here are other interesting programs from across the Department:
- Have you checked out the online collection of objects at the Museum of International Folk Art? The museum’s collections represent diverse cultures and constitutes the largest collection of international folk art in the world. The core collection donated by museum founder Florence Dibell Bartlett representing 34 countries has grown to a collection of over 130,000 objects from more than 100 countries.
- What is fog? Earth mist. What is a meteor? Missed from space! Get it? The Galactic Laffs series of posts on the New Mexico Museum of Space History Facebook page provides a selection of amusing space-related puns for all ages. New Galactic Laffs are posted each week.
- Catherine Watson, a volunteer at the New Mexico Farm & Ranch Heritage Museum, recently wrote about the rustic western objects in her personal collection, as part of a series of posts on the museum’s Facebook page about its volunteers’ favorite heirlooms and objects at home.
